Peek at our Last Week


This week is the last week of January. We will be continuing to work, study, and learn some of the same concepts we began last week. We finish up our science unit on weather with a test on Friday. A study guide went home Monday and is within this blog post if you need to download a new copy. There are no extra credit spelling words this week. Students will have math homework, spelling homework and their reading log to do this week. Here is a peek at our week!

Monday: Severe weather: Thunderstorms
Tuesday: Science will continue with severe weather focusing on tornadoes. In reading we will have a test on Wednesday.
Wednesday: Science will finish severe weather hurricanes. Reading Test today. Math is on adding 2 digit numbers on a number line. Students will have to label a number line and practice adding up the numbers. This is a new strategy students need to know.
Thursday: Library book checkout and lesson. Begin new reading unit on scientific ideas and concepts.
Friday: Spelling, science and grammar test.

  1. Teacher Follies January 29th at 6pm.
  2. Library lesson checkout 1/29
  3. Jump Rope for Heart is all month.
  4. Spirit Day Terrific Kid assembly on January 30th 8am

What We Are Learning

Reading: This week we will start with a reading review of concepts we have already learned. Later on in the week we will start to focus on steps in technical procedures. How do you follow step by step instructions?  Our weekly reading test will be on Wednesday. 

Phonics: The students will review phonogram cards and identify them in our spelling words.  Five words will be introduced each day. Please study every night. They will be tested on these words on Friday.

Writing/Grammar: We will continue writing informational texts. We will be writing about severe weather. We will also learn how to write compound sentences. Grammar quiz is on irregular verbs (this was taught last week).

Math: We will continue learning  different ways to add 2 two digit numbers, with and without regrouping.  There are many strategies introduced to allow students to develop a better number sense when it comes to addition.

Spelling this week will focus on the phonemes ow, kn, th, ng, er, ou, and ch.

What's Going On This Week


This week we will be continuing to work, study, and learn some of the same concepts we began last week. There are no extra credit spelling words this week. Students will have math homework, spelling homework and their reading log to do this week. Here is a peek at our week!

Tuesday: Math quiz today on counting by 100's, 10's, and 1'sFinish unit on diagrams and illustrations. We will have a test on Wednesday.
Wednesday: Reading Test today. Begin new math unit on adding two digit numbers.
Thursday: Library book checkout. Begin to review previously taught reading concepts.
Friday: Spelling and grammar test.

What We Are Learning

Reading: This week we will be reviewing standards previously taught such as using illustrations, characters, and story structure.   
Phonics: The students will review phonogram cards and identify them in our spelling words.  Five words will be introduced each day. Please study every night.
Writing/Grammar: Students will begin to learn to write paragraphs and informational texts. Our grammar quiz this week will be on capitalization.
 Math: The beginning of the week will be spent finishing skip counting over 100  and a test on Tuesday.  Beginning Wednesday, we will start adding two-digit numbers with two-digit numbers.
Science : We will continue our unit on weather by discussing severe weather and ways to be safe during it.

Weekly Plan

This week we will be continuing to work, study, and learn. There is no extra credit spelling word this week. Students do have math homework, spelling homework and their reading log to do this week. Here is a peek at our week!

Monday:  NO SCHOOL
Tuesday: Continue our study of poetry: alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme, and repetition. Start our new math unit on counting by 100's, 10's and 1's.
Wednesday: Conclude our study of poetry: alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme, and repetition. Continue our new math unit on counting by 100's, 10's and 1's.
Thursday: Library book checkout is today. Begin new reading topic of diagrams and illustrations.
Friday: Reading lessons will be on diagrams and illustrations we will have a test next Wednesday. Math will continue to focus on counting by 10's, 100's and 1's. Spelling and grammar test today.

Important Dates and Things to Keep in Mind

  1. Pizza hut coupons go home for students who completed their reading goal for the month of December 1/14.
  2. Report Cards go home 1/14 please sign and return the envelope. 
  3. GATE testing information goes home 1/14 in report card envelopes.
  4. No School on January 20th. 
  5. Jump Rope for Heart Program will be going on all month.

What We Are Learning

Reading: On Thursday his week students will learn how to use various text features (e.g. diagrams, captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently. Test on Wednesday, January 21st. 
Phonics: We will review phonogram cards and identify them in our spelling words.   Five words will be introduced each day. Please study every night, there are no extra credit words this week
Writing/Grammar: We will begin writing informational texts, as well as learning about irregular past tense verbs. We will have a grammar quiz on punctuation on Friday.
 Math: We will be counting by 100s and 10s over 100 as well as adding 100s and 10s and multiples of 100s and 10s. This has been a hard concept for some of them so they may need some help.
Science : This week we will be recording daily weather as well as exploring wind as a major element of weather.
